February 2026 has arrived, and we are in full swing! This month is welcomed with thoughts of love, the colors red or pink, hearts and cupids, parties and sweet desserts, and the anticipated expression of intimate feelings for someone. Many are making plans with significant others, close friends, loved ones, and family. It's a month to celebrate our emotions and show our love in many ways. Personally, I am a big fan of love in all its forms; however, February is also American Heart Month. (Yes, we are still talking about health; I didn’t forget.) Established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, this month serves as a reminder to implement the essential changes required for maintaining heart health. If ones heart and all connected parts are inefficient, heart disease is just one of many issues to worry about. Let me give you some tips on how to keep your heart in tip top shape. I’m quite sure you know them by hard, but since heart disease is still one of the leading cause of deaths for men and women, it won’t hurt to go over them again.
Tip #1 Monitor what you eat
If you enjoy greasy spoon restaurants or food that leads you into a “food coma” or feeling sluggish, it's time to rethink your eating habits. We must remember that humans eat to survive, not merely to indulge. Consuming regular heavy meals is detrimental to your health, especially your heart. Have you ever heard of high blood pressure? Or high cholesterol? These health issues primarily arise from poor dietary choices. To minimize your risks, ensure your plate is filled with a good variety of vegetables, a moderate amount of carbohydrates, and a substantial source of protein. Aim to eat a colorful array of foods – this means your plate should be vibrant and diverse. Go ahead and eat the rainbow! Remember, the body needs good fuel in order to live long.
Tip #2 – Move your body
Your body is not merely a machine, but in many ways, it functions like one. If you neglect to move your "machine", you will experience a decrease in performance. You were designed to be active and it doesn’t have to be intense. Walking serves as an excellent form of exercise; it’s straightforward, requires no special equipment, doesn’t need a gym membership, and it’s something you already do—and do well! Engaging in exercise allows your body’s organ systems to meet the daily demands you place on it. When you exercise, along with a solid diet, your body can operate efficiently and carry out essential reactions, even those of which you may not be consciously aware of. However, when your body can no longer function as it should, you will certainly notice it—through various signs and symptoms that are far from pleasant.
Tip #3 – Keep up with medical physicals
I understand! No one enjoys visiting the doctor! However, it is essential to stay on top of annual physicals. Examining your body allows you to catch potential issues in their early stages. You and your doctor can address any problems before they escalate. Identifying a disease or disorder early gives you a more effective strategy to combat it before it can dominate your health. Fighting proactively is much simpler than reacting defensively.
Tip #4 – Drink H2O
Please, please, please, ensure you drink enough water. The amount of water you need truly depends on your weight. According to the formula, you should take your weight in ounces and divide it by two - this is the number of ounces of water you should consume daily. Do you know, the human body is primarily composed of water? In fact, every single reaction in the body requires water! Therefore, it is crucial for life. Additionally, water helps to prevent dehydration, enhances the appearance of your skin, and supports healthy digestion. And for those who find the taste unappealing – there are countless options available to improve the flavor; there’s no excuse.
Let’s revisit our initial discussion in this article regarding love. Is there a meaningful link between love and the heart? Does this love have any impact on maintaining heart health? The answer is affirmative on both counts! When you consume a balanced diet, acquire all the essential nutrients for optimal bodily function, engage in exercise 3-5 times weekly, stay hydrated, and monitor your health, you will experience a profound sense of well-being. This sensation of health and peak performance triggers a positive effect within the body, especially in the heart, and particularly when that uplifting feeling shows as love. The body operates through hormones, and there exists a specific category known as "feel good hormones." These hormones are essentially neurotransmitters released to induce a sense of happiness, high moods, euphoria, and you guessed it, love. They are named endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. When these neurotransmitters’ levels rise, they produce remarkably beneficial effects on the entire body. Not only will you feel great, but your body will also become healthier, thereby enhancing your overall health, heart health, and overall well-being. How can you boost these hormones? Simply start with the recommendations I provided earlier!
Indeed, adopting a healthy lifestyle will foster a positive feedback loop within yourself. When you feel good about who you are, you will radiate that love towards others with much more positive energy. And thinking about the state of our world currently, we all need more love. You know the saying; you feel good, you do good. Happy love and heart month ya’ll!
